Students of group 52-112s of the Social Work and Counseling programme at Kherson State University, Halyna Didenko and Svitlana Bilous-Chaikovska, participated in a three-day training dedicated to a trauma-informed approach to working with children. The training took place in Odesa as part of the GFFU project implemented by the non-governmental organization “Successful Woman.”

The topic of the training is highly relevant for future social work professionals, as the realities of the full-scale war have made it especially important to understand childhood trauma, recognize its impact on a child’s emotional well-being and behaviour, and develop practical skills for providing appropriate support.

Over the course of three days, the participants had the opportunity to deepen their knowledge, become familiar with contemporary approaches and practical tools for working with children, and gain valuable experience through interactive exercises, discussions, and hands-on activities. Particular attention was paid not only to supporting children who have experienced traumatic events but also to the emotional well-being of professionals themselves.

An important component of the training was the therapeutic experience, which helped participants better understand the value of self-awareness, recognizing their own emotions and experiences, and maintaining personal resilience. Effective support for others begins with a professional’s ability to care for their own emotional well-being. The students also had the opportunity to benefit from supervision support and further develop their practical skills.

Upon completion of the training, Halyna Didenko and Svitlana Bilous-Chaikovska received certificates confirming their participation and achievement, which will serve as an important addition to their professional experience.

We sincerely thank the administration of Kherson State University for providing opportunities to participate in meaningful professional development activities, and the NGO “Successful Woman” for an insightful programme, a high level of organization, openness, and for creating a space for learning, support, and the exchange of experience.

Professional development is a continuous journey of learning, practice, and humanity. Social work is not only about providing assistance; it is also about the ability to listen, understand, and stand by people when they need support the most.
