KSU scientists presented research on adaptive supply chains at the international conference DESSERT 2026
On October 4, 2026, within the framework of the 16th International Scientific and Technical Conference «Dependable Systems, Services and Technologies» (DESSERT 2026), which was held on the island of Corfu (Greece), a presentation of scientific research by representatives of Kherson State University took place.
The work titled «Dynamic Supply Chain Transformations Enabled by Reinforcement Learning-Based Adaptation to Environmental Conditions and Participant Networks» was presented by scientists of the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering of KSU — Professor Vitalii Kobets and lecturer Dmytro Klyonov. The presentation took place during the session S5.2 «AI for Environmental Health and Societal Resilience», where Professor Vitalii Kobets also served as a co-moderator of the discussion.
The presented work highlights the vulnerability of traditional static models and centralized supply chain planning during geopolitical disturbances and market fluctuations. To overcome these limitations, KSU scientists proposed a concept of adaptive supply chains based on decentralized reinforcement learning (Q-learning), where each network participant (manufacturer, carrier, market node) acts as an autonomous agent.
The developed system is implemented as a Digital Twin within the Mesa 3 library environment using Python. Simulation showed that under conditions of external shocks, such as fuel price spikes or increases in carbon tax, autonomous agents independently adjust their routes and production volumes thanks to a time-lag mechanism. The key scientific achievement of the study is the proof that under conditions of asymmetric information, decentralized agent learning directs the market toward an asymmetric integrated equilibrium state, where some chains remain decentralized, while others become vertically integrated.
The presentation of results at the IEEE DESSERT 2026 international conference demonstrates the development of scientific research at Kherson State University in the fields of artificial intelligence, digitalization, and the modeling of complex adaptive systems.
