KSU scientist spoke at a conference in Venice
Vice-Rector for Academic and Research-Pedagogical Affairs Daria Malchykova has participated for the second time in the annual conference of the European Urban Research Association “Cities Under Strain: Rethinking the ungovernable”. The conference took place at the University of Venice.
The event brought together over 300 scientists in a dialogue about cities at the intersection of polycrises and transformations, about the need to rethink approaches to studying urban processes, and about new managerial, analytical, and practical frameworks that allow for working with uncertainty, multi-level risks, and social inequality
“It was an honor to present, within the walls of the University of Venice, our research conducted with Nadiia Antonenko and Ihor Pylypenko, "Frontiers of Adaptation: Multi-Hazard Urban Risks and Bifurcation Dynamics in Conflict-Exposed City" (https://www.cogitatiopress.com/urbanpl.../article/view/11551), the key takeaway of which shows that urban recovery and resilience in a polycrisis and under the pressure of constant military danger are formed through adaptive practices, non-linear recovery paths, bifurcation dynamics, and changes in the paradigm of urban governance. How can the ability of a city to stabilize under such conditions, flexibly adapt to new challenges, and transform its strategic vision for development allow for the formation of a new, functionally viable configuration of the urban environment even in a state of constant instability?”.
According to the scientist, the Kherson case proves that true resilience in times of polycrisis lies not in a mechanical return to the pre-crisis state, but in the ability to pass through "bifurcation points," decentralize critical life-support systems, and rely on the local self-organization of society.
“Our analysis at the level of 2 residential districts in Kherson emphasizes: the future recovery of cities that have experienced extreme violence is based on recognizing the irreversibility of certain changes and building new spatial and social connections, where the experience of survival and resistance becomes the foundation for development”, – says Daria Malchykova.
