International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Crimes of Genocide
The International Day of Commemoration of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide, Honoring Their Dignity and Preventing This Crime was proclaimed by UN General Assembly Resolution 69/323 of September 29, 2015. It was symbolically chosen to mark this date on December 9, because on this day in 1948 the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide was adopted and opened for signature.
The Convention, which entered into force in 1951, is the cornerstone of the fight against genocide. It enshrines the international community’s commitment to “never again” and provides the first international legal definition of genocide that has been widely accepted at both the national and international levels.
