Research Activities of the Department

The department's research activities cover current issues in Germanic and Romance studies, linguistics, literary studies, intercultural communication, linguoculturology and foreign language teaching methodology.

At different periods, the department's research was conducted within the framework of the following research topics:

"Functional-Pragmatic, Cognitive-Discursive and Linguocultural Aspects of the Study of Linguistic and Speech Units of Modern German" (No. 0116U008711), headed by S. M. Soldatova;

"Structural-Semantic and Communicative-Discursive Aspects of the Study of Linguistic and Speech Units of Germanic and Romance Languages" (No. 0121U110816).

The results of this work include the academic staff's participation in international, national and regional research and practical conferences, as well as the publication of monographs, teaching and methodological manuals, research articles and conference abstracts.

In 2018, the Department of German and Romance Philology hosted the First All-Ukrainian Research and Practical Conference “LANGUAGE. SOCIETY. CULTURE”, which brought together academic staff of the department and the Faculty of Foreign Philology of Kherson State University, as well as scholars from various Ukrainian educational institutions. The conference proceedings were published in the Scientific Bulletin of Kherson State University. Series “Linguistics”, Issue 34.

On 13 May 2019, the department organised the research and practical seminar “Vectors of Contemporary Linguistic Research” to mark Science Day. The seminar comprised two sections: “Current Issues in Germanic Studies” and “Contemporary Research in Romance Languages”. Bachelor's and Master's students of the department participated in the event.

The department also hosted a student research group for third- and fourth-year students of the Faculty of Foreign Philology entitled “Structural-Semantic, Linguocultural and Cognitive-Discursive Aspects of the Study of Linguistic and Speech Units of Modern German”, supervised by Associate Professor S. M. Soldatova.

Research conducted within the topic “Functional-Pragmatic, Cognitive-Discursive and Linguocultural Aspects of the Study of Linguistic and Speech Units of Modern German” (state registration number 0116U008711) was closely connected with the research and methodological training of future philologists and teachers of German language and literature, contributing to students' deeper understanding of the development of the modern German lexicon.

In November 2019 (Minutes No. 3a of the department meeting dated 11 November 2019), a new departmental research topic was approved: “Structural-Semantic and Communicative-Discursive Aspects of the Study of Linguistic and Speech Units of Germanic and Romance Languages”. All academic staff of the Department of Romance-Germanic Languages and Intercultural Communication were to be involved in the development of this topic (state registration number 0121U110816, dated 26 April 2021; supervisor – Associate Professor I. V. Hoshtanar).

The research focuses on the study of the semantic and structural features of the formation of linguistic and speech units of Germanic and Romance languages at different linguistic levels, including lexical, grammatical and phonological levels; the study and clarification of the nature of communicative acts; the identification of the specific features of verbal and paraverbal means of communication; the characterisation of the functioning of linguistic and speech units in different types of discourse; and the linguistic analysis of contemporary German- and Romance-language discourse within a communicative-pragmatic approach.
