Lecture Announcement Date:
28 November 2026
Time: 15:00
The lecture is dedicated to commemorating the victims of the 1932–1933 Holodomor, as well as the mass artificial famines of 1921–1923 and 1946–1947.
Topic: The Holodomor of 1932–1933 in European Diplomacy
The lecture will explore how European states perceived, recorded, and interpreted the crime of mass starvation in Ukraine, which the Soviet authorities deliberately concealed. It will highlight the role of Polish, German, and other European diplomats in documenting evidence of the famine, the political circumstances of interwar Europe that shaped the circulation of information, and the reasons democratic governments hesitated to make public the truth about the crimes of the Stalinist regime.
Special attention will be given to the multinational character of the Kherson region, where numerous Jewish, Polish, German, and Swedish colonies existed throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. These communities and their networks of contacts became important channels for transmitting information about the famine, enabling European diplomats, civic organizations, and religious leaders to obtain independent testimonies about the tragedy in Ukraine.
All interested participants are welcome to join.
