KSU took part in the "Evening of History with Honcharivka" event.
June 11, Doctor of Historical Sciences, professor of the Department of History, Archaeology and Teaching Methodology of Kherson State University Oleksandr Cheremisin participated in a meeting of the scientific and educational series «History Evening with Honcharivka», organized by KZ «Oles Honchar Kherson Regional Universal Scientific Library».
“For me, this event was a wonderful opportunity to join the conversation regarding the current problems of the historical development of southern Ukrainian cities and the traditions of local self-government”, – commented Oleksandr Cheremisin.
During the meeting, he spoke about the main provisions of the monographic study "Urban Self-Government in Southern Ukraine in 1785–1917" https://ekhsuir.kspu.edu/.../6cc5fc29-11ec-41b2.../content, in which, based on a wide range of archival sources and historiographical developments, the evolution of the region's municipal institutions was traced. Particular attention was paid to the legislative foundations of the activities of self-government bodies, the formation of city budgets, the development of engineering and communal infrastructure, as well as the participation of municipalities in the development of educational, medical, and charitable institutions.
“A separate emphasis was placed on the specifics of the development of Southern Ukraine as a region that had its own socio-economic and cultural dynamics. Based on historical sources, it was demonstrated that southern Ukrainian cities were formed in close connection with the Ukrainian ethno-cultural space, and modernization processes here took place under the influence of entrepreneurial initiative, active international trade, and intensive communications with the European world. It was these factors that determined the features of urbanization processes and the formation of local self-government in the region. In the context of modern decentralization, the Russian-Ukrainian war, and the rethinking of the historical past, the issues of the development of municipal institutions are acquiring new scientific and social significance. I am convinced that turning to the historical experience of Ukrainian cities contributes to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of local government functioning, the formation of civic culture, and the development of democratic traditions”, – noted Oleksandr Cheremisin.
