At the Faculty of Ukrainian and Foreign Philology, Journalism and Arts, within the framework of the international digital educational and scientific project «Linguistic Research of a Modern Scientist: Challenges, Discussions, Perspectives», a series of open online lectures is ongoing.

An open lecture by Olga Mitchuk, Doctor of Sciences in Social Communications, was held.

The speaker presented the concept of media as a strategic tool for shaping national security and public consciousness. She noted that in conditions of hybrid aggression, information ceases to be merely a resource and transforms into a full-fledged weapon.

During the lecture, the transition from traditional ways of covering events to a hierarchical structure of security narratives was also examined. Priority topics for newsrooms are becoming defense issues, international politics, and volunteer initiatives.

The professor placed a special emphasis on the development of crisis journalism, which requires specialists to take maximum responsibility for every published word. In her opinion, media professionals today effectively ensure the protection of the state in the symbolic space of meanings.

«In modern warfare, victory belongs not only to those who possess military power but also to those who are capable of controlling the information space», - emphasized the scientist.

The discussion also touched upon practical aspects of media hygiene and countering disinformation. The speaker emphasized the importance of developing critical thinking and thoroughly verifying data so as not to become tools in the hands of enemy propaganda.

«It is important to analyze every fact in maximum detail. Deep analysis and critical thinking are the only way to resist the manipulations and distortions produced by the aggressor country», - noted Olga Mitchuk.

There was also talk about analyzing the ethical dimension of activity, where the balance between the right to information and state interests is crucial. Concluding the meeting, the researcher emphasized the consolidative function of the press, which contributes to supporting the people's morale. Media act as a catalyst for national resilience, forming a shared symbolic space and recording the collective experience of war.

The second lecture of the cycle was delivered by Olha Oleksandrivna Novikova—a professor, Doctor of Philology, and member of the National Commission on State Language Standards. The theme of this event was defined as «Ukrainian Orthography as a Standard of the State Language».

«Correct speech, literate writing, a rich vocabulary – these are the signs of a responsible citizen of a free Ukraine» – the speaker noted at the beginning, smoothly transitioning to the main part of the lecture – the standardization of Ukrainian orthography, which came into force on March 28, 2026.

A little more than one year was allocated for the processing of norms by the national commission, so a decision was made to create a working group that included leading scientists of Ukraine: B.M. Azhniuk, T.Y. Kovalevska, S.P. Bybyk, O.O. Taranenko, L.P. Hnatyuk, L.L. Shevchenko, and N.S. Holikova.

The team approached the work very responsibly, therefore bringing the document out for public discussion, listening to suggestions and comments.

Olha Novikova also devoted attention to explaining some changes in the Ukrainian orthography. Among them: capitalizing the names of government bodies, removing names associated with the aggressor country from illustrative material, and writing suffixes –yv– (–o) in words denoting collective and substantive concepts.

The professor paid special attention to the topic of using feminatives, noting that scientists consider such constructions not mandatory in use. That is, in official style, titles of positions are used as they are documented, but in ordinary everyday speech, one can speak as the heart desires.

«My opinion, as an ordinary citizen, is that our women are not so weak that they should show their equality or superiority through this very thing» – said the speaker, outlining her attitude. Summarizing the lecture, the professor noted that about 5% of the entire document was changed in the orthography, so these changes are not very noticeable to us, but they are mandatory for use on the territory of Ukraine!
