A lecture was held at KSU to mark the anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster
On April 27, a lecture was held at the Faculty of Business and Law of Kherson State University, dedicated to the anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster – one of the largest man-made tragedies in human history.
Professor Vasyl Stratonov spoke – a direct participant in those events.
During the event, they spoke about April 26, 1986, when the accident at the fourth unit of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant changed not only the ecological and social landscape of Ukraine but also influenced global nuclear safety policy.
«The world realized: “peaceful atom” can be not only a source of energy, but also a serious threat», – emphasized Vasyl Stratonov.
The speaker paid special attention to honoring the memory of the liquidators – the people who were the first to fight the consequences of the accident. Their contribution is invaluable, as they acted by risking their own lives for the sake of others' safety.
«Chernobyl became a lesson in responsibility – for decisions, for the price of mistakes, and for the importance of truth. In the first days after the accident, people did not know the real scale of the tragedy, while the radioactive cloud was already spreading across Europe, causing harm to thousands of people», – emphasized the professor.
Separately, during the lecture, modern challenges were discussed. In particular, the occupation of the Chernobyl zone by Russian troops and the 2025 incident when a drone hit the reactor sarcophagus. According to the speaker, this indicates a new danger – the possibility of using civilian nuclear facilities as an instrument of war, which is already being viewed worldwide as a manifestation of nuclear terrorism.
«Chernobyl today – is not only a symbol of tragedy, but also a symbol of heroism and memory. It is a story that united society and reminds us of the importance of openness and responsibility. Honoring the liquidators – is not only a tribute to the past, but also a guarantee of a safe future in which similar tragedies must not be repeated», – summarized Vasyl Stratonov.
