KSU Representative Spoke at a Conference at the University of Birmingham

From April 10 to 12, the annual conference of the British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies (BASEES 2026) took place at the University of Birmingham.

Among the speakers at the academic event was Natalia Kuzovova, Head of the Department of History, Archaeology and Teaching Methods at Kherson State University.

The conference was organized by the Center for russian, East European and Eurasian Studies (CREES). Its themes included research in the fields of politics, history, sociology, geography, film and media, linguistics and others, with a focus on the Central and Eastern European region.

Natalia Kuzovova presented within the panel: “The History of Childhood in the Ukrainian SSR: Between Social Engineering and Everyday Experience.”

“I spoke about childhood during the Holodomor of 1932–1933. I have previously participated in research on childhood during the Great Famine in Ukraine. In this presentation, I focus on a new question: how did Soviet policy shape children’s experiences at the regional level?

I also presented results of our analysis of regional survival strategies, with particular attention to the role of the family as a key survival factor.

Finally, we considered the Holodomor as a childhood experience marked not only by trauma but also by remarkable resilience,” said Natalia Kuzovova.
