April 16, 2023 marks the 160th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding conservationist, public figure and philanthropist, creator of the world-famous steppe oasis, founder of the Biosphere Reserve "Askania-Nova" - Friedrich Eduardovich Falz-Fein (April 16, 1863, Askania-Nova - August 2.1920, Bad Kissingen).

April marked the 160th anniversary of the birth of the founder of the world-famous Askania-Nova nature reserve, Friedrich Eduardovich Falz-Fein.The history of Askania-Nova begins with the appearance of German colonists in Tavria.In the fall of 1827, the German Duke Friedrich Ferdinand Aghalt-Ketensky purchased 42,300 acres of land in an unnamed area marked on the map as "steppe No. 71" from the Russian Empire for almost nothing.13 years later, a farm grew there, named by the Duke "Ascania-Nova" in honor of his ancestral estate in Germany.Three decades later, the Duke's descendants sold the estate to the German colonist Fein.He skilfully started the business and soon made a considerable fortune, mainly from the sale of wool from Merino sheep.During the wedding of his only daughter and a neighboring colonist, Fein set a condition: combine the two surnames into one.Since then, the "Falz-Fein" dynasty - "shepherd kings" - was founded in the south of the Russian Empire.
